In June of last year after the murder of George Floyd, we committed to putting our principles in action and standing in solidarity with the Black community. Later that month we launched the Changemakers Scholarship! This scholarship supports Black students from NYC who have demonstrated leadership and a commitment to social justice. Students were asked “How are you an agent of transformation toward social justice? Give specific examples from your life and personal beliefs.” We received BEAUTIFUL and POWERFUL submissions. We were thrilled to give $1,000.00 a piece to two young Black women who are changemakers in their communities. We would have loved to award all our applicants!
In 2021, we are not only standing in solidarity with the Black community, we are UPLIFTING the Black community. As ASTEP turns 15 years old this year, we are strengthening our commitment to the communities we serve. To honor Black History Month we are establishing the Changemakers Scholarship Fund. Our goal this year is to raise $5,000.00 to support 5 Black scholars with their academic pursuits. We will be awarding the 2021 Changemakers Scholarship in June, but we need your help NOW. Please make a donation this Black History Month by supporting Black History in the making!
